What is Functional Nutrition?

Functional medicine, a subcategory of alternative medicine, focuses on restoring balance in dysfunctional physiological pathways.  This means the practitioner focuses on correcting the core issue, as opposed to just treating symptoms.  For example, instead of treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with prescription medications to reduce stomach acid and reflux, a functional dietitian will use foods, herbs or supplements, and lifestyle modifications to achieve the same results.  This eliminates the risk of unwanted side effects or nutrient deficiencies that may result from such medications.

A functional dietitian works with patients to correct and optimize the body’s physiological pathways by:

-Changing the environment

-Identifying and focusing on triggers & mediators

-Considering biochemical individuality

What can a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist do for you?

Unfortunately, in this day and age, it has become the ‘norm’ to live with symptoms such as fatigue, loss of focus and energy, skin issues and poor digestion.  These may be signs of bigger, underlying issues such as food sensitivities or nutrient deficiencies.  Therefore, almost everybody can benefit from an RD consultation, especially those with:
-Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes or Gestational Diabetes

-Heart Disease

-Food Allergies & Intolerances

-Metabolic Syndrome

-Overweight, Obesity

-Eating Disorders or disordered eating patterns

-Low energy, chronic fatigue

-Cancer or in cancer remission

-Preventative health for those with strong family history of heart disease, diabetes, cancers or other chronic illnesses

-Autoimmune diseases (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Irritable Bowel Disease (Crohn's & Ulcerative Colitis))

-Thyroid Disease

-Gastrointestinal disease (IBS, SIBO, Celiac disease, GERD, etc)

-Acne, rashes, eczema and other skin abnormalities

”The food you eat can be either the safest & most powerful form of medicine or, the slowest form of poison.” –Ann Wigmore
